چکیده

In this paper we propose a robotics framework for studying emergence and collective adaptation. We describe two sets of experiments, where a pool of heterogeneous Khepera robots, participate in adapting the collective behavior, without being aware of it but just in virtue of the design of their internal structure. The innovative aspect in our approach rests on a system integrating communication as an active and dynamic component in the adaptation, and not only as a static part of the robots interactions.

A Collective Robotics Application Based on Emergence and Self-organization

This paper presents a collective robotics application, which consists of making a pool of robots regroup objects that are distributed in their environment. The innovative aspect in our approach rests on a system integrating operationally autonomous robots that make the global task achieved by virtue of emergence and self-organization.

Collective displacement of modular robots using self-reconfiguration

Collective displacement is a very useful behaviour for living creatures. This behaviour can appear in a flock of birds, a school of fish, or a swarm of insects. Flocking behaviour is a common demonstration of the power of simple rules in collective displacement emergence by (Reynolds, 2007). The study of the displacement of a robot in an unknown universe is a traditional subject of robotics (Fr...

Emergence of Self-Organized Amoeboid Movement in a Multi-Agent Approximation of Physarum polycephalum

The giant single-celled slime mould Physarum polycephalum exhibits complex morphological adaptation and amoeboid movement as it forages for food and may be seen as a minimal example of complex robotic behaviour. Swarm computation has previously been used to explore how spatio-temporal complexity can emerge from, and be distributed within, simple component parts and their interactions. Using a p...

Chapter 3: Distributed intelligence

In the last chapter we concluded that pattern formation in natural systems occurs as a consequence of simple local rules. We looked at plants, at artificial creatures in the game of life, and at seashells. We now look at emergence of behavioral patterns that can be interpreted by an external observer as some kind of “distributed intelligence”. In this chapter we will proceed by inspecting some ...

Different Genetic Algorithms and the Evolution of Specialization: A Study with Groups of Simulated Neural Robots

Organisms that live in groups, from microbial symbionts to social insects and schooling fish, exhibit a number of highly efficient cooperative behaviors, often based on role taking and specialization. These behaviors are relevant not only for the biologist but also for the engineer interested in decentralized collective robotics. We address these phenomena by carrying out experiments with group...
